Required Reading | Interviews with Icons | 2

"We're not all supposed to be Swiss watchmakers. We're supposed to love our lives, and love the time, and watch the oak leaves blossom, you know. We're supposed to have a good time in this life."

-Peter Coyote in Interviews with Icons: Flashing on the Sixties by Lisa Law.

Required Reading | Interviews with Icons | 1

"...turn people on to their first instinct and their creative imagination, which is just, once again, the wind blowing through their heart, which is just spirit taking a dance with them. Something to aspire toward."

Kabuya at Magnuson Park | Sister Adria

September 9, 2012

I spent a wonderful afternoon at Magnuson Park celebrating the beautiful artwork of friend and sister Adria Garcia. Be sure to visit the installation of "Kabuya" - a magnificent accumulation of hand woven earth created by Adria and her collaborator Sarah Kavage. It wonderful to see to beautiful young artists putting city resources to such excellent use. I'm so inspired by it all!

1939 | A Mark of History

For all you buttonhole enthusiasts out there, this is a taste of what my 1939 Singer industrial buttonhole machine will be able to do once it is fully repaired and back in my studio. I managed to find the one machine repair guy in the nation who is old enough to have trained on this very machine as an apprentice in the 1940s - and he is now bringing the beauty back to life for me.

See those tails off the ends? While they would be trimmed away on a finished garment, they tell us on this sample that a beautiful piece of soft gimp runs inside the hole to give it strength and dimension, with the lustrous silk wrapping itself around the perimeter of the hole. No modern machines compare to the buttonholes this one can deliver, and I look forward to putting hundreds of them on MC garments down the road and making the service available to all you makers out there who are eager to put this time-tested mark history and quality in your own work.

BAM Craft Biennial Preview | Body Language

It is a great pleasure to have been juried into the prestigious Craft Biennial: High Fiber Diet coming to Bellevue Arts Museum this winter.  Enjoy this preview of the work that will be on display and some snapshots of the drawings (and table-top studio mess!) that made the new work possible.

Excerpt from artist statement by Michael Cepress:

"This new collection of pieces is derived from a series of studies of the male figure.  Drawing from a live model for several months, I worked to understand the armature that would give structure to the garments I would design. By carefully observing the nuances of each figure, this search for forms, layers, shapes and gestures would come to inspire how I cut and construct the cloth.  The body, its energy and movement, and my deep investment in craftsmanship and layered form guided the creation of these new works."

I've signed a lease on a second studio space - MC is growing and will soon have a beautiful small showroom to feature my finished works!

Many thanks to Luke Beetham and his company Luke Electric for installing this wonderful new track lighting in my showroom-to-be! Looking for a friendly and competent electrician with great style? Luke is your man!

The hands of artists Julia Freeman and I added this little touch to bare walls, officially bringing the "MC" to the new MC space!
