Sounds like you already have the answer to your own question. Though this is quite a lovely piece. I'd keep it in my closet, that for sure.
What alterations did you make?
Oddly, the size small shirt was entirely too wide for its wearer. So, along the back panel I inserted two vertical darts running the length of the shirt (one at each shoulder blade) to pull it all in. Luckily, adding these stayed true to the original western cut of the shirt, and it worked out quite well if I do say so myself.
Fascinating. I find (I should probably say "found" as it's been a long time since I shopped properly) that many lines feature shirts that are too wide. Appealing shirts by Comme Des Garcons and Agnes B. were much too wide for me in size small. I'm wider these days: perhaps I should give them another try...
I want to learn more about sizing standards and how all of this works. Fashion designers almost always mention in interview something about how "fit matters most" to them, yet moments like these make me wonder. I dont doubt their quest to find the perfect fit, but I doubt whatever else it is that makes these ready to wear pieces so far off for the average slender young male who is likely to wear them.
